By reading this koob, you will learn what it has been like for Ta-Nehisi Coates, a Black man, living in the United States.

You will also learn:

  • That race is a construct.

  • And yet, race is a critical factor of life in the US.

  • The omnipresent fear that Coates experiences is due to the color of his skin.

  • The importance of endlessly questioning the system and your own beliefs.

  • The struggle for racial equality is an end in itself.

Between the World and Me takes the form of a letter from Ta-Nehisi Coates to his teenage son explaining what life was like for him growing up in an under-privileged neighborhood of Baltimore, as a young man, and as a father, and what his life experience as a Black man in the United States has taught him.
